Elements of a personal space ...

No matter the size ,of where you create your green patch ... it can go beyond ... just pots and plants ... to being a personal space ... with the type of plants you enjoy growing ... with accent pieces ... with the pots you pick ...
white ... is my favourite color ... when it comes to flowers ... and I love this lily against my urns ... which I had painted sand color a few years ago ...
with age the pots are getting a beautiful patina as the paint wears off... I spray my pots as well, along with the plants... everyday ... I love the mossy growth on the pots ... patina and texture :)
its tranquil under my chinese orange ... with filler plants ... the tiny daisies ... polka dot plants... its a beautiful mish-mash of all the tiny plants that would other wise cluter up the small space ... if I plant them in separate pots...
I love collecting stones ... they do find there place in my pots ...(if not on my coffee table) ...
... its as much fun collecting pots as it is collecting plants ... I have to admit ... I some times do traumatise my plants to a few transplants before I feel the pot is right :) ...

fairly new place, this balcony garden of mine ... I am still waiting for my plants to fill out the spaces ...

Flowers ... leaves ... moss ... stones ... water ... pots ... my best ingredients to a beautiful place ... a personal space ...

And the compliments coming from a farm lady... wow, have to say thank you.

Rajee, what a gorgeous blacony you have. I have just moved to Mumbai and we have a small balcony where I want to put lots of plants as well. Do you have any suggestions for nuseries where I can get good plants and care. We live in Bandra. Many thanks. Tammy

Love your balcony garden, Rajee! I love the tranquility . Yeah, and I love the mossy look too. (I even go around in the monsoons, scraping moss off the garden walls to transfer it to my bonsai pots :D
I read somewhere that you could encourage that time-worn patina by brushing on some buttermilk on the outer surface of the pot. Apparently it helps moss along. I've never tried it out but you could experiment if you want.

Hi Tammy,
I know just a lil' bit about Bandra ... but lets see ... I honestly don't know about the care part, but as for the plants see if you can find something at these places ...o.k I remember this place opposite Bandra Talao, there's this exhibition hall of some sort and it has a plant nursery outside it ... let me know how it is:) and...and...and... aah yes ... on Turner road I remember ... theres this place called Tehmi Terrace (Green Gifts)... do check it out and again... honestly I have been wanting to stop at all these places but never managed to since I am at the other end of the world...Navi Mumbai... OOh and theres this shop ... I think that area is called the pali Naka... at the corner there is a store which keep flowers... pots and plants ... this would come on your right side if you go from the turner road ...I may not be very precise in direction and location...but I am sure locals can help you with a bit of directions.I had short stints to Bandra to visit my mum when she lived there ...so sorry if this is not much help. Though you can try Sunita over at Urban Gardener ... she looks like shes been around that part of the city. Any further help.. you can always get back,to me... would love to help.

Hi Sunita,
Thanks gardener ... appreciate your compliments... its always a nice feeling to share and be appreciated.AAhhh.. that mossy look... to die for ... if I had it my way I cover everything in moss ... you are dead right about that moss growing recipe... heres an even more potent one ... dried moss... curd ... beer ... brush on the pots... bear with the aromatherapy ... and God shall bless you with loads of moss ... it works like magic ... try it ... and the beer'll never hurt you either ;)

Hi Anonymous,

A good place to get plants is in Santacruz east, near Grand Hyatt. There are plenty of nurseries/plant sellers on the road which goes to Grand Hyatt.

Dear Rajee,
love your blog, your house and your garden. Am waiting for the builder to finish our building so that we can start doing up the house. What is the name of the plant in the first picture ( in which the lovely buddha head piece is kept)?

thanx

Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for sharing your plant sources ... its a nice feeling ... to inspire and share through the blog ... truly love your dropping by ...I hope I'llget to hear from you often ... it inspires me and is sooooo.... encouraging.
The plant you wanted to know about... well I did a lil' look up on the web ... its called the 'Pilea Depressa'... I think I like its common names better...."Shiny Creeping Charley," "Giant Baby Tears" "Mini Peperomia"...
Have to say you'll enjoy growing it... pretty much a not much fuss kind of a plant.

Oh, I completely understand the need for the 'right' pot. My gardener sighs and shakes his head each time I hand him a new acquisition that is prettier than the last one ;-)

Rajee Sood said...

Yes, I know what you mean ... for most people it is ...line them up and its just pots ... whatz the big deal about them... gardening for them is about the plants and not pots ...
But for me ... its about both ...
guess we think alike on these matters ... :)

Hi Rajee,
What paint did you use to paint your pots? Did you hand paint or spray paint them? I'm looking to give mine a makeover and yours looked lovely (the sand colored one), so I thought I'd ask :)

Rajee Sood said...

Hi Chryselle,
I did hand paint them ... infact it was just your normal distemper ... from Asian paints ... though now I think I should have used the plastic emulsion ... infact on second thoughts... I think you could even try the exterior paints ... so that it doesn't start to chip off in the rains or 'cause of watering ...
And you are right I wanted the sand look and it came out pretty exciting ... :)
The shade I used , I am forgetting now but if you want I can refer to the shade card ... just let me know :)
Oh ... make sure you give them atleast two coats if not more ... (just like on the walls) ... to get the true color.
All the best and let me know how it works out for you.
Rajee

Those are such lovely shots! You've inspired me to clean up my dusty old patio and do some planting. the Buddha within the pots just exudes tranquility, what a clever idea!

Rajee Sood said...

Zaara,
I love to hear ... you inspired me ... these words are so gratifying ... if your patio project gets done ... promise me some picture ... I'd really love to see them.
I love the image of Buddha ... but his eyes and lips is what makes the piece ... beautiful and calming or it doesn't have that effect ...

I have a question - are the pots that you painted made of clay/terracotta or some natural material? The planters I tend to get here are some kind of "fake" terracotta i.e. very lightweight and almost plastic-ish. I'm not sure if synthetic materials will "take" paint.....

Rajee Sood said...

Hi Zaara,
Yep, these pots are clay ... but in case you are getting the synthetic ones just use a different paint .But the more authnetic clay look will definitely come only on earthen pots... try home depot ... Lowe's and a lot of local nurseries often keep big pots ... or they are sure to help you out. All the best ...
