I have a thing for collecting white ware. My first buy were set of dinner plates, quarter plates and dessert bowls. And they were not bought …for the love of white ware…but simply because that is what I could afford at the store, as a newly wed. Soon came the tureens…the salad bowl…the jug…and the …and the …well I’m not sure when and where it turned from economical reason to a whim and fancy. But it has… and now I am always eyeing those white pieces.
Have to say…they always make the food look great. And I just don’t have to watch out for what color linen I pick up. The white ware goes with every color combination. Every time it works magic with all the different linen and table décor. Each piece may not be of the same style and design…but the color pulls them together. I used to be disappointed by what was available at the Indian stores… but with more designer boutique culture (no… not the mall culture)…there is a good selection of whiteware these days. I personally enjoyed going to Good earth stores in Delhi…in Pune an interesting store called Bougainvillea caught my fancy…now in Mumbai…I am out to explore … If this catches your fancy... a thing to remember is ... white ware doen't mean...white... it may vary in shades ... but that doesn't mean it isn't whiteware...

Not into white porcelain myself, I have to say that white emphasizes the sculptural quality of pottery and tableware to the fullest. Love the shapes of the tureen and the jug.
Hi Chandan,
Thank God for not making us all like the same things... I think it makes it more fun and interesting that way ... ;D
I often say that white is a passing phase for me ... then I open my crockery unit and stares back at me is a collection spanning over 10 years... and then I just have to admit I have a thing for white ...but talking about shapes ... I think its the shape which draws me to each piece I pick up ...
Hey... as always great to hear from you.
Aaah... so thats the set which supplied the cup for the strawberries to tumble out of!
N-I-C-E !
That's the best part of whiteware ... it makes everything look so good. The food looks tastier and the linen looks livelier. What more could a homemaker want?
Sunita, have to say each time you comment ... you make me feel like one of those big smiley's google has ... infact have you seen those big ones that even go boing-boing and are sparkly all over ... ;)
Lady you are a wise one... you don't miss a thing do you :)... I love and really enjoy finding interesting white pieces.
What a lovely collection!
Valid point about these pieces going well with any coloured table linen:-)
Arch
Thanks Arch ... guess one of the reasons I love tem is that they bring so much versatility on the tablescape...
Just discovered your blog via Sunita, and I love collecting any type of ware. At this moment it is whiteware as well with the modern shapes. Square , rectangle and triangle shapes. I hope one day to use them in my tea garden restaurant whenever that might be, meanwhile I use them when I have special guests. Especially the visitors from over and away (our local dialect). Some think that because we live on a tiny island we eat off leaves. I actually place the banana leaf on the white plates for an effect that they will forever remember LOL Many of my friend are very impressed with the ware I have collected from the $3.00 store every thing sells for three dollars our money (USD $1.50) Even the rich expats send their staff to buy all the ware there to furnish their million dollar villas LOL. Love your Tureen, that is on my list as well. I have to tell the staff at the store to be on the look out for me. You have a fun blog.
Hi Helen,
You can say that again... I love collecting wares... period ;D... and they are never enough ... I am sooo... glad you dropped by ... hope you have that tea garden restaurant happen soon ... can only imagine what lovely pictures we'll be treated to ...
I agree, all that you say about whiteware is true ... one is limit less in ways to use the white with all the colors out there ...
The banana leaves you mention ... reminds me of the time I did a tablescape and used monstera leaves as place mats and to wrap the wine bottles, it turned out soo stunning ... all the guests thought I had a garden full of monsteras :)
You have a great blog your self ... reminds me a lot about Mauritius. Thanks once again for dropping by Helen
Hello Rajee,
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your blog... I accidentally came upon it while browsing. I still have not gone through all your articles, but everyone of them is aesthetically very pleasing. I have to admit you have rekindled the "collecting bug" that has been sleeping in me for the last two years.(Only because of the slow economy:-)) Where do you shop for your whiteware, they are so lovely. Oh, BTW, I am a big Martha fan too!!!
Happy blogging,
sukanya
